Knight Errant is a game that I made for the Trijam #304 ! The theme of the jam was "One button adventure". The game was made using Pico-8.

IMPORTANT: The tri-jam is a 3 hour game jam, but I spent more than 3 hours (about 4), so I'm not competing, but feedback and advice are welcome.

The game:

Choose the path you want to take! You have 5 seconds to choose between 3 paths: fight, explore or shop. Gear up and try to reach the highest level possible!

Choose your path:

  • Fight: Fight some monsters, but be careful, they get stronger as the game goes on! If you manage to win, you will level up and get some gold.
  • Shop: Buy powerful items that will increase your strength and defense stats, but you will need some gold to buy them.
  • Search: Explore your surroundings, in the forest you can find some healing herbs, in the mountains you can find some gold.  Sometimes you can also find powerful items.

Controls:

  • Keyboard controls :
  • [Z] or [C] : Choose the path that you wish to follow
Gamepad controls (E.g. X-Box):
  • [A] or [Y] : Choose the path that you wish to follow

About me:

Hi, I'm Zellkoss. I'm new to game jams, having got into them last year.

I took a short break from coding, but I'm back for this Tri-jam.

It was quite a challenge! I got stuck a few times with coding issues, which made me lose a precious minutes!

I had a lot of problems with game balancing (and I still do), and other issues with this submission but I took this jam more as a coding/creative and planning exercise and learning experience, and from this point it was really good.

Please any comments and recomendations are welcome!

I have two complaints, but other than those the game feels like the beginning of an absolute banger oldschool game!

Issue 1 is the fact that combat goes way to fast (sometimes even in a frame) and it is really hard to understand how it works, during the few times it does not skip. Maybe an explanation in the description? IDK.

“Issue” 2 is that forests on full HP seem irrelevant, as other than the small chance of finding something cool, they do nothing for you, which the other tile already does as well, and gives you money otherwise.

A small “YOU DIED” or something screen that is skipabble with the one button would be also nice, cuz sometimes you can skip the fact if you are not paying that much attention.

With some expansion, refinement and sound effects, I can see a really cool game shaping out from this! Well done! Enjoyed my runs, died at level 27.
