[Postmortem] IGDB April 2024

The jam ended and result are posted!  I'm making this last post regarding the Jam as a kind of postmortem, of my jam experience.

First of all, the result, 11th overal, which is awesome ! Thank you for all peoples that rated my game and posted nice and encouraging comments !

What went well:

  • Overall gameplay / Idea:  I think my game idea/gameplay works quite well. I also scored quite well on the Creativity and Theme criteria, which is encouraging.
  • Art/Visuals: It's something that always scare me, but I think I managed to make something decent.

What went meeeh:

  • Messy code: I was trying to use Lua metatable, ended up doing something messy and not very nice. I should have used inheritance.
  • Game content: I did not realise that my game was only 1-2 min longues to finish until late in the jam. I wanted to make something more like 5 minutes. Level design is something that is quite difficult and I need to improve it.
  • Music / Sound: I did the SFX in a hurry, the sound was created with a tool with a slight modification. I just don't have any musical skills, and maybe I never will. There is so much to learn.

My next steps:

  • I plan to refactor the code to use Lua inheritance, that would be a good way to learn.
  • (add a bit of polish, from the suggestion I got in the comments.)
  • (Try to expand the game, rework the randomized mode)

I'm not sure if I'm going to work much on this game or start a new project. I will think about it...

Finally, I'd like to say that I had a lot of fun taking part in this Game Jam, it's only my second one! I was a bit scared to start doing Game Jam, but I'm glad that I overcame my fear and finally started doing it. I love coding and doing it is a very fun way to practice it.

I'm ending this post with a gif of my first day and last day of work. It's always fun to see from were you started:
